Dear Friends:

Brazilians have long recognized Nelson Rodrigues as a major figure in world theater. René Buch, the award-winning founder of Repertorio Español, recently called him Latin America's greatest playwright. Amazingly, Nelson Rodrigues is almost completely unknown in the United States. The Nelson Rodrigues Festival and Symposium to be held September 27-October 30, 2005 seeks to celebrate Rodrigues and introduce his work to the American public on the occasion of the 25 th anniversary of his death.

The Festival will feature a series of events during the month of October celebrating Rodrigues' life and work, including a full staging of The Asphalt Kiss at 59E59 Theaters, a one-day symposium at City University of New York's Elebash Recital Hall, readings of his greatest plays by leading New York theater companies, as well as screenings of films based on his work.

I respectfully invite you to become a lead sponsor by underwriting a portion of this ground-breaking event. Please download our contribution form above and see the many ways you can help.

The culminating event of the festival will be the New York premier of The Asphalt Kiss -- a play that theNew York Times has called Rodrigues' most timely play and a work that "confronts current-day questionsof homophobia and tabloid sensationalism in prophetic fashion."

The Asphalt Kiss, based on a new English language translation will be produced at the prestigious 59E59 Street Theaters and will run for sixteen performances, from October 7th - 29th. The play's director, Sarah Cameron Sunde, recent recipient of the Princess Grace Award, has just completed a critically acclaimed production of Jon Fosse's Night Sings Its Songs at The Culture Project. Joining her are Lauren Helpern, the OBIE Award winning designer for her work on BUG and Traci Klainer, a 2002 Lucille Lortel nominee.

The Festival and the New York City debut of The Asphalt Kiss are supported by the Brazilian Consulateand the Brazilian Embassy. We are seeking further funding for this first significant New York theater productionand Festival. Please consider becoming a sponsor or making a contribution. All contributions willbe acknowledged in the program and are tax-deductible.Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions.
